Two-person exhibition: Bonnie Collura and Stan Narten
June 19, 2008 - August 1, 2008
Bonnie Collura, Stan Narten
The Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition of Bonnie Collura and Stan Narten opening on Thursday, June 19 with a reception for the artist from 6-8 pm and will run through August 1, 2008.
Sculptor Bonnie Collura and painter Stan Narten toy with the distinction between figuration and abstraction. Both Collura and Narten strongly reference film as a starting point, yet the results yield a physical presence unique to the style and media each works in.
Bonnie Collura constructs grand sculpture with meticulous whirls of limbs and movement. The surfaces are obsessively worked to a luxurious range of smooth and textured finish. Taken in from afar, the work is a jumble of energetic abstraction. Figures take form, yet an elusive quality pervades. Stan Narten precisely manipulates stills from television and film yielding carefully ordered abstractions. Narten often adds additional dimensions or layers that break the picture plane by creating subtle visual anomalies.
Bonnie Collura received her MFA in sculpture from Yale University. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout New York, France and Germany. In 2005, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship Award for sculpture.
Stan Narten received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts this spring.
